The Kim Versteynen Trio (KVT)
The trio is often inspired by the inexhaustible American Songbook, and its most important interpreters. Apart from that the trio eagerly winks to the better popsongs of the last twenty, thirty years, coloured by the intimate nightclub setting that suites Kim so well. In this context Kim takes the liberty to reshape the songs and improvise at will.
Kim is being more than well accompanied by Arne Van Coillie on piano and Flor Van Leugenhaeghe on double bass. Both men are experienced jazz musicians and have worked with big names in the Belgian and foreign jazz and pop scene.
During his studies at the KUL Arne Van Coillie already worked as a self-taught man in the jazz field, after which he he enrolled in the new jazz department of the Leuven Lemmens Institute, where he took classes from Bert Joris, Frank Vaganée, Ron van Rossum, Philippe Aerts and Dré Pallemaerts. Jazz history became a specialty. In Hasselt he now teaches at a music secondary school and at the conservatory. Arne has worked with Henk de Laat, André Donni, Tony Ghyselinck, Marc Godfroid, Hilde Vanhove, Robert Jeanne, Sabine Kühlich, Andres Liefsoens, Jan Muës, Carlo Nardozza, Roderik Povel, Iris Romen, Richard Rousselet, Joep van Leeuwen, Flor Van Leugenhaeghe, Luc Vanden Bosch, Herman Vanspauwen, Lieven Venken, Rony Verbiest, Yvonne Walter... His pianistic influences include Wynton Kelly, John Lewis, Red Garland, Herbie Hancock. Apart from being a pianist, he also works as a composer, arranger and accompanist.
Flor Van Leugenhaeghe learned his craft at the legendary stages of the Antwerp scene ("de Antwerpse sien"): the Gard Sivik en the Swingcafé. This led to engagements with bands as the Dave Pike Quartet, the David Crane Trio, bands with Hendrik Braeckman, Jan Muës en Jeroen Van Herzeele. He accompanied a.o. Bert Joris, Thijs van Leer, Peter Hertmans, Frank Vaganee, Phil Abraham,… Flor played and plays folk and cabaret - "kleinkunst" (Jasperina de Jong, Stef Bos, Della Bossiers, Ingeborg, de Nekka-Nacht), rock (La Piovra, Kathleen Van den Hout), theatre (EWT-Deurne, De Zwarte Komedie), and salsa (Conjunto Janesh). Hij was involved in several radio-and tv-recordings.
